I once rented a “Hyundai Elantra or Similar” and ended up with a manual Challenger Scat Pack.
When I went to pick up the rental the girl at the counter told me they were out of small cars and asked if I wanted an SUV. I said that it really wouldn’t work for the trip we had planned, so she sheepishly asked if I could drive stick. I said yes, and she said “well you can have that orange Challenger then, nobody ever rents it because nobody can drive stick”
485hp on worn out summers is about the most fun you can have on dirt. My codriver and I started out as the #76 and #16 but after forgetting to swap numbers between runs several times timing and scoring decided we were now the #01 for obvious reasons.

Damn, that sounds far better than the automatic chally I rented and autocrossed. It was not bad once I figured out how to get it to stay in second gear throughout the event. But if I did too hard of a burnout at the start, it would downshift into first and then screw up my run when it stopped responding to inputs. Also managed to burn lots of oil on a car with under 1000 miles on it. Must have been very fun in some dirt.

Yeah, we turned the TCS completely off because the car got super freaked out by the complete lack of traction.

Note to future Arrivederci - don’t buy suspiciously cheap orange Challenger.

Default of getting into the car for me every run was ignition on, sport mode button, traction control off button, shift to M, select 2, and then it was good to go. And that was on relatively clean pavement. So I can only imagine on dirt turning TCS off was essential. TCS was good at getting cleaner, faster starts but I needed to use throttle to cure understeer so it was more harm than good. It looked like you could just leave the manual in first, that must have been nice! I think the auto was a 8 speed or something so 1st gear was not fast enough even for autox.
